Major Science and Technology Project of the Autonomous Region - Research on Water Issues in Xinjiang and Technical Demonstration

The research and demonstration of comprehensive utilization technology for multiple water sources in Xinjiang "comes from a major scientific and technological project established by the autonomous region in 2012 to address the contradiction between rapid industrial development and severe shortage of water resources. The project integrates domestic sewage reuse, industrial wastewater reuse, brackish water desalination, and rainwater and flood collection and utilization, and is a typical project for the development and utilization of multiple water sources. This project takes Urumqi City as an example to develop a technology and demonstration for the recycling of domestic sewage that is suitable for the actual situation in Xinjiang. Through the construction of an artificial wetland ecological river network system, the recycling technology of domestic sewage, the application of bio electrochemical coupling technology in deep wastewater treatment, and the in-depth development of bio electrochemical coupling technology, a typical water treatment industry is established for the treatment and recycling of high salt and high organic wastewater. Multi source development and utilization are implemented to address major issues and further research directions in the comprehensive utilization of multiple water sources in arid and semi-arid areas of Xinjiang.

This project has published 5 papers and applied for 6 invention patents. The project achievements have been put into practice in the water to city project of creating urban rivers, lakes, and landscapes in Urumqi.
